Biography
Sydney Jelinek was born on March 18, 1899 in Wilmington , Delaware .
He began practicing rowing in 1920 at the Pennsylvania Barge Club in Philadelphia . Initially, he performed in a lightweight boat, but then moved to a swing-eight steering wheel, in which he stayed for the next three years. In addition to rowing, he also represented the club in water polo competitions.
He achieved the highest success in rowing at the international level in the season of 1924, when he joined the main team of the American national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, won the right to defend the honor of the country at the Summer Olympics in Paris . In the swing fours with the helmsman, he successfully overcame the preliminary qualifying stage, while in the decisive final race he came to the finish third behind the crews from Switzerland and France - thereby winning the bronze Olympic medal.
After the Paris Olympics, Jelinek no longer showed any significant results in rowing in the international arena.
Subsequently, he worked as an architect in Philadelphia.
Died March 9, 1979 in Philadelphia at the age of 79.
