The film enjoyed great success among millions of German viewers, becoming the leader of the rental. The original frames of the film have long been considered lost. However, the film was restored. With the help of the German Federal Film Archive and private collectors, a complete film and sound version of The Assault Battalion 1917 was prepared. At the same time, national-socialist and nationalist motifs were removed, as the comparison with the 107-minute version shown in the USA shows.

Story

1917 year. The western front of the First World War . The film shows the combat path of one of the German units - the assault battalion . Throughout 1917, soldiers of the battalion are transferred to the most difficult sections of the front, where the most bloody battles are fought: in the spring, the battle on the Ena River in Champagne, battles in the muddy mud of Flanders, the battle of Cambrai . About their deprivations and bloody losses in battles against the French and British. Despite all the difficulties and sadness for the fallen comrades, the main characters never lose courage.
