The picture is a bust portrait of Major General Baron Pavel Petrovich Sukhtelen from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
During the Patriotic War of 1812, the captain of the Cavalry Regiment, Sukhtelen, was an adjutant and was on a diplomatic mission in Sweden , for his father’s merits in September he was granted a baronial title ; on his return to Russia from November, he was in the corps of P.H. Wittgenstein and participated in the battle on the Berezina , for military differences during the pursuit of the remnants of the defeated Great Army was promoted to colonel . In the foreign campaign of 1813, he distinguished himself in many battles, and since December 1813 he was in the Volyn Uhlan regiment . In 1814, he fought in France , for the assault on Soissons was promoted to major general . Depicted in a general's uniform, introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the neck are crosses of the orders of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree and the Prussian Red Eagle of the 2nd degree and Pur le Merit ; on the chest is the cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, the silver medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew's Ribbon , the crosses of the Swedish Military Order of the Sword of the 4th degree and the French Order of St. Louis (the ribbon of the order is mistakenly depicted in blue instead of red ), as well as an unidentified yellow metal medal [3] . The artist did not depict the neck cross of the Order of St. Anne of the 2nd degree with diamond marks, which Suhtelen was awarded in 1813 for the battles in Prussia [4] .
Despite the fact that on August 7, 1820, the General Staff Certification Committee for Suhtelen was included in the list of “generals whose service did not belong to the Committee’s consideration,” the actual decision on writing his portrait took place soon, shortly after the Dow arrived in Russia , because the artist’s fee It was paid on February 18 and March 10, 1820. The finished portrait was accepted into the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [5] .
The State Hermitage Museum has a lithograph by an unknown artist taken from a gallery portrait in London by Paul & Dominic Colnaghi & Co. with the date 1824, commissioned by the St. Petersburg bookseller S. Florent (paper, lithography, 67 × 50.2 cm, inventory number ERG-491) [6]
In the 1840s, a lithograph was made in the workshop of K. Kray in the portrait of I. A. Klukvin of the portrait, published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [7] .
