The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Prince Ernst Konstantin of Hesse-Hippen-Philippstalsky from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Prince Ernst Filippstalsky was chief quartermaster of the Cossack corps M. I. Platov , and lost his right leg in the Battle of Borodino . He returned to duty in March 1813 and was at the Army’s Headquarters for special assignments. For differences in the battles of Bautzen and Lutzen he was promoted to major general ; commanded the combined infantry-Cossack brigade in the corps of F.F. Wincingerode and was in the battles of Grosberen , Dennevice and Leipzig . The campaign of 1814 was under siege of Hamburg [2] .
Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on board the uniform are crosses of the Prussian Order of St. John of Jerusalem and the Hessian-Kassel Order of Merit ; crosses of the orders of St. George of the 4th class and St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with a bow, silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , stars of the Hessian-Kassel Order of the Golden Lion and the Prussian Order of St. John of Jerusalem [3] . Signature on the frame: Prince Ernest Hessen Filipstalsky, Gen. Mayor .
Despite the fact that on August 7, 1820, the Committee of the General Staff for Attestation, Prince Ernest of Hesse of Philippe, was included in the list of “generals whose portraits cannot be placed in the gallery” due to the fact that “before being promoted to major general, he lost his foot in the rear guard On August 28, 1812, and was not in the rank of major general in battles, the actual decision to paint his portrait was made two months earlier: on June 9, 1820, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on June 30 and November 12, 1820 [4] . Since the portrait depicts a star of the Order of St. Anna of the 1st degree, which was granted to Prince Filippstalsky on October 12, 1821, the portrait was painted after this date. In London in 1823, Messrs Colnaghi, by order of St. Petersburg bookseller S. Florent, made an engraving by G. Dow with the date September 1, 1823 [5] - respectively, the gallery portrait was completed earlier than this time. A print of this engraving is also available in the Hermitage collection (paper, mezzo-tinto , 56.5 × 41.5 cm, inventory number ERG-502) [6] . The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
