Rosky, Francois Joseph

Francois Joseph Rosky ( French: François Joseph Rauski ; December 13, 1837 , Sargemin - March 26, 1910 , Arcachon ) - French military conductor, known as one of the authors of the popular march " Sambra-i-Maas Regiment ".

His father, military trumpeter Joseph Rosky ( Rauski , fr. Raouski ), a Pole by birth, was born in 1795 in Zabluduv , participated in the Battle of Waterloo and later settled in France as a bandmaster of the cavalry regiment. Rosky Jr. grew up in Agno , in 1856-1858. studied at the Paris Conservatory , after which he entered as vice-bandmaster in the 1st Cavalry Regiment, and since 1863, the bandmaster of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. Member of the Franco-Prussian War , in 1870 was captured near Metz [1] . Upon returning to France since 1871, he served as military bandmaster of the 18th infantry regiment of the French army under the command of Colonel ; the regiment was stationed in Pau ; Rosky himself lived in Juranson . By order of his commander in 1873 (also referred to as 1876 or 1879 in some sources) he took the melody of Robert Planet ’s song “Sambra-i-Maas Regiment” as the basis of the military march, significantly expanding and reworking it. The march was first voiced during the celebration of Bastille Day in Pau and gained exceptional popularity over the years, although the question of the contribution of Planet and Rosky to this success was the subject of debate [2] [3] ; modern sources propose to divide this success equally into three, including the author of the lyrics Paul Cesano [4] .

Cavalier of the Order of the Legion of Honor (1880). Having retired, he settled in Arcachon and until 1896 led one of the local brass bands.

Streets in Pau ( Fr. Rue François-Joseph Rauski ; 1937) and Agno (1999) are named after Roski. By the centenary of the death of Roski, his name was given to the picturesque road leading to Juranson through the valleys of and [5] .
