The picture is a busting portrait of Major General Prince Sergei Nikolaevich Ushakov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Ushakov was the chief of the Courland Dragoon Regiment , distinguished himself in the Battle of Borodino , promoted to major general for the battle of the Savior Kuplai , and was awarded the Order of St. George of the 3rd class for the Red Battle . In the foreign campaigns of 1813 and 1814, he commanded the dragoon brigade, fought in Poland and Saxony , distinguished himself in the battle of Katsbach . He died in February 1814 in a battle at Kraon [2] .

He is depicted in the general's uniform of the Courland Dragoon Regiment, introduced in 1817 - because of his death in 1814, Ushakov could not and should be wearing such uniform in the general uniform of 1808 with two rows of buttons. On the neck of the cross of the Order of St. George 3rd class; Crosses of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with a bow and St. John of Jerusalem , silver medal “In commemoration of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and embroidered cross of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem [3] . Signed on the frame: S. N. Ushakov 2nd, General Mayor .

On August 7, 1820, the Ushakov Committee on the General Staff Certification Committee was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on June 12, 1821, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. Since Ushakov died in 1814, measures were taken to find his prototype portrait; there is a letter from the Inspectorate Department of the Military Ministry to the senior adjutant of the Separate Corps of the Internal Guard, Colonel Ushakov, requesting that he have a portrait of the late general, to which he replied that "Major General Ushakov does not know, there is no portrait and it is not known who has it . " Nevertheless, the search for the prototype was crowned with success. The Dow fee was paid on March 13, 1823. The finished portrait was accepted into the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] . The prototype portrait of modern researchers is unknown.
