The picture is a portrait of Major General Count Andrei Semenovich Umanz from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Umanets was the chief of the Kinburn Dragoon Regiment and was a member of the 3rd Western Army and conducted rear-guard battles. In the overseas campaigns of 1813-1814 he fought in Saxony and Silesia , in France distinguished himself in the battles of La Rotier and Fer-Champenoise [2] .
Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there are crosses of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree and the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; on the right side there is a gold cross “For the capture of Prague” , a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , a bronze noble medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the Vladimir ribbon and a star of the Order of St. Vladimir 2nd class [ 3] . Signature on the frame: A. S. Umanets, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Umanets General Staff Certification Committee was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery." The Dow fee was paid on August 10, 1825 and June 21, 1827. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on July 8, 1827. The previous delivery of the finished portraits to the Hermitage was on October 18, 1826, so it is believed that the portrait was painted between these dates [4] .
In the 1840s, a lithography was made from the portrait in the workshop of K. Krai , published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [5] .
