Theodore George Osius [1] ( born Theodore George Osius ; born 1961, Annapolis , Maryland , USA ) is an American diplomat . US Ambassador to Vietnam from 2014 to 2017.

Personal life
Born in 1961 in Annapolis, Maryland [2] . He studied at in Vermont , which he graduated in 1979. He continued his education at Harvard University . During training, he wrote articles for the student newspaper . In 1984 he defended his bachelor's degree in humanities in the field of social sciences. After a year, he trained at the American University in Cairo . From 1985 to 1987, he worked as a legislative correspondent with Senator Albert Gore . In 1989 he defended his master's degree in art in international economics and US foreign policy at the at Johns Hopkins University .
In addition to English , fluent in Vietnamese , French and Italian . Speaks Arabic , Hindi , Thai , Japanese and Indonesian .
Ted Osius is an open homosexual . Married to Clayton Bond, a former employee of the , whom he met at a meeting of . Men married in 2006 in Vancouver , Canada . Together, the couple raise a son and daughter.
Career
In 1989 he entered the . From 1989 to 1991 he served in the US diplomatic mission in the Philippines . Then he served in the US missions in the Vatican and the United Nations .
In 1996, he became one of the first American diplomats to work in Vietnam after the end of the Vietnam War . In 1997, he contributed to the creation of the US Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City . In 1998, he returned to Washington to advise Vice President Al Gore on Asian politics. In 2001, he was appointed Regional Environmental Officer at the US Embassy in Thailand . In 2004, he returned to Washington and was hired as Deputy Director of the Office of Korea . In 2008, he was appointed to the US diplomatic mission in India , as a political minister-adviser. In 2009, he became deputy ambassador to the US Embassy in Indonesia .
In 2012, he returned to Washington and was hired as a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies . In 2013, he became an assistant professor at the .
In May 2014, Osius was appointed President Barack Obama by the US Ambassador to Vietnam. His candidacy was approved by the Senate in November 2014. He was US Ambassador to Vietnam from December 16, 2014 to November 4, 2017. [3]
