Zehra Dogan (born 1989) is a Turkish journalist and artist. Founder and editor of the Kurdish news agency Jinha, which employs only women. In 2017, she was sentenced to 2 years, 9 months, and 22 days in prison for “propaganda of terrorism” because of the news she published, her posts on social networks, and her painting [1] , which depicted the consequences of the clash between the Turkish military and militants of the Kurdistan Workers Party in the city of Nusaybin . Conclusion Dogan caused an acute international reaction, this, in particular, is devoted to one of the paintings by Banksy . On February 24, 2019, Zehra Dogan was released from prison in Tarsus. Biography
In February 2016. On July 21, 2016, she was detained in a cafe and then arrested. On March 2, 2017, she was acquitted of membership in an illegal organization, but was found guilty of “propaganda of terrorism” because of the news she posted, her posts on social networks, and her painting, which depicted the consequences of a clash between the Turkish military and militants of the Kurdistan Workers Party in the city of Nusaybin , and sentenced to 2 years, 9 months and 22 days in prison [4] [5] .
In prison, Zehra and other prisoners created the Özgür Gündem Zindan newspaper, the name of which is a reference to the name of the Kurdish newspaper Özgür Gündem [5] [6] .
On October 29, 2016, the Jinha agency created by Dogan was closed by the Turkish authorities, as well as more than 100 other media outlets [7] .
In November 2017, Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei wrote a letter in which he expressed solidarity with Dogan, and also drew a parallel between the persecution of opposition art workers in China and Turkey [8] .
Awards and Prizes
In 2015, Zekhra Dogan won the Metin Goektepe Journalism Prize , which was awarded to her for her work on Yezidis who escaped from captivity of the Islamic state [9] .
In March 2018, the British artist Banksy showed in New York a 20-meter canvas, which depicted Zehra Dogan [10] .
In October 2018, Dogan became a laureate of the International Fund for Women in the Media [11] .
