Reaches a body length of 15.2 to 16.6 cm. From the crown of the head to the top of the back - a slight dark hatching. A black bridle and a line behind the eyes give the face a mask-like appearance. The sides of the head and the narrow strip above the eyes are gray. The area of the supra-mantle is dull olive brown. The tail feathers have dark gray edges. The outer tail feathers have gray tops. The upper covering wings are black-brown. Chin with black streaks. The throat is slightly lighter than gray than the chest. The underside is gray with an olive-reddish tint, especially on the sides and at the base of the tail. Iris from yellow to golden yellow, pink beak, legs from yellowish pink to brownish-gray. Sexual dimorphism is not expressed. In young birds, the top is more reddish-brown with a stronger hatching. The underside is tan with a brown hatching, with the exception of the middle of the abdomen.
The species is common in the volcanic regions of Costa Rica and western Panama, especially in the volcanoes of Irasu and Cerro de la Muerte in Costa Rica, as well as in the volcanoes of Cerro Fabrega and Baru in Panama.
The species is found in open meadows with undersized shrubs and wastelands, as well as along roadsides. Most often, the species is found above the border of the forest at an altitude of 2600 to 3000 meters above sea level.
Birds usually go in search of food in pairs. The diet includes seeds and berries, as well as arthropods, including insects and spiders (Araneae), which birds collect mainly on land or in vegetation.
Nests were found in April. Feathered young birds were observed in May and June. A cup-shaped nest is built from dry herbs on a moss overgrown with moss, lining it with milk thistle and hair. Hanging moss forms a canopy over the nest. The masonry consists of two pale blue eggs with purple dots that are centered on the long end.
