History
In 1238, Batu hordes raided Volokolamsk. They completely ravaged the city. Then, at the end of the XIII century , he was again defeated - during the invasion of Khan Duden . Until the middle of the 15th century, the city was a gathering place for the troops of Tver , Moscow, and Novgorod — these cities fought a stubborn struggle. Volokolamsk was often besieged by Lithuanians and Tatars , but the city with tenacity and courage reflected the raids of enemies. In 1380, Volokolamsk passed into the specific possession of the Prince of the city of Serpukhov Vladimir Andreevich , but Novgorod still had influence on the city. At the beginning of the 15th century, Vasily I Dmitrievich retreated from Volokolamsk to please the Novgorod boyars. In 1456, Vasily II the Dark already conquered the city again, and then transferred it, together with the lands adjacent to it, by testament to his son Boris . Thus, the specific Volotsk principality arose, which had a center in Volokolamsk [1] .
The Volotsk princes began to expand and strengthen their city. The mass development of the center of Volokolamsk and the creation of defensive fortifications in it began. Many settlements appeared in Volokolamsk. Blacksmiths, gunners, tanners and other artisans settled there. A lot of church churches, which were built in honor of the patron saints of trade, speak directly about the role of trade in the life of the townspeople of that time. There were five monasteries in Volokolamsk - they defended the city if it was attacked by enemies [1] .
After the unification of the Russian lands around Moscow, the struggle for Volokolamsk between the princes was over; starting from the middle of the 15th century, the city was mentioned less and less in chronicles. In 1513, the Principality of Volotsk passed into the possession of Moscow. The only building that has been preserved since that time is the Resurrection Cathedral , built around 1480 in the Volokolamsk Kremlin by order of Prince Volotsky .
