Biography
By origin from the nobles. In 1857 he graduated from the Academy of the General Staff, was assigned to the General Staff, in 1861-1862 he was in the circle of officers of the General Staff, close to N. G. Chernyshevsky ). He was fond of the ideas of P.J. Proudhon . In 1862-1863, he published in the Russian Word magazine a series of articles promoting the ideas of anarchism. In 1863 he retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Until 1865 he lived in Europe, in Dresden and Paris.
In 1866, co-authored with V. A. Zaitsev, published in St. Petersburg the historical and journalistic book "Raptors" (reprinted in 1872 in Zurich), submitted it to the Censorship Committee on April 4 ( 16 ), 1866 ; coincidentally, on this day the assassination attempt of D.V. Karakozov against Emperor Alexander II took place ; He was arrested and sentenced to 16 months in prison for anti-state and anti-church propaganda. Sealed copies of the book were destroyed. In the book Social Revolution (Die soziale Revolution; written in 1864, published in Berne in 1868) he predicted the “introduction of communism” as a result of the victory of the revolution. In 1868 he was exiled to Arkhangelsk, then to the Astrakhan province , in 1872 he fled from exile abroad, and joined the associates of M. A. Bakunin . One of the co-founders (together with G. A. Lopatin) of the Russian (Turgenev) library in Paris in 1875 [1] .
