By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Ryleyev was the chief of the Koporsky Infantry Regiment and commanded the 1st Brigade of the 12th Infantry Division. In the battle of Saltanovka he was seriously wounded and left the army for treatment for a long time, at the end of the year he was promoted to major general . He returned at the beginning of 1814 and served as interim commandant of Dresden [2] .
Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817. On the neck there are crosses of the Order of St. Anne of the 2nd degree and the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; crosses of the orders of St. George of the 4th class, St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with a bow, a gold cross “For the capture of Bazardzhik” , a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and a bronze noble medal “B memory of the Patriotic War of 1812 ” on the Vladimir tape . Signature on the frame: M.N. Rylyev 1st, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the General Staff Committee for the Attestation of Ryleyev was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on January 11, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. At that time, Ryleyev was a detachment commander in a separate building of military settlements in the Mogilev province . An undated letter was sent to him from the Inspectorate Department of the War Ministry : “The Emperor deigned that his portrait be copied by the painter Dove, therefore, when he was in St. Petersburg , to have a meeting with this artist,” to which on March 14, 1822 Ryleev answered: “ I consider this to be a special favor for me and a duty to fulfill exactly when the circumstances of the service, which now occupy me, allow me . " It is known that in July 1824 Ryleyev came to the capital, after which he met with the artist. The Dow fee was paid on December 29, 1824. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
In the 1840s, in the workshop of I.P. Pesotsky , a lithography was made from the portrait, based on a drawing by I. A. Klyukvin , published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [5] .
