The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Dmitry Petrovich Rezvoy from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Rezvoy commanded the artillery in the Danube army of Admiral P.V. Chichagov , made a trip to Volyn , and from there to Belarus. During the overseas campaigns of 1813 and 1814 he commanded artillery in the Polish army and fought in Saxony and Silesia ; distinguished himself during the siege of Hamburg , for which he was introduced to production as lieutenant general , but the emperor Alexander I refused him the next rank [2] .
Depicted in the general artillery unit, introduced in 1820 - Frisky could not wear such a uniform, since he retired in 1815 and was put on an old-style uniform with two rows of buttons. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne 1st degree with diamonds; on the neck there are crosses of the orders of St. George of the 3rd class and St. John of Jerusalem ; on board the uniform is a cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , a gold cross “For the capture of Ochakov” , a star of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree and an embroidered star of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem [3] on the right chest. Signature on the frame: D.P. Ruzvoi, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Rezvoy Committee of the General Staff for Attestation was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery" and on October 17, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. Rezvoy himself at that time was retired and permanently resided either in St. Petersburg or on his estate in the Yamburg district of St. Petersburg province , so it is possible that the portrait was painted from nature. Most likely, the portrait was completed after the death of Rezvoy, which followed on January 19, 1823, since the Dow fee was paid on March 13 and April 25 of the same year. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
Compositionally, the gallery portrait is very close to a miniature with a portrait of D.P. Frisky work by Karl Verne , executed in 1803. At the beginning of the 20th century, it belonged to Dmitry Petrovich’s grandson, Infantry General D. M. Rezvoy, and was published by Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich in the publication “ Russian Portraits of the 18th and 19th Centuries ” [5] . Her current whereabouts have not been established.
The collection of the Chelyabinsk State Museum of Fine Arts has an author's repetition of a gallery portrait, slightly differing in size and darker color (canvas, oil, 71.5 × 63 cm, inventory number Ж-211) [6] .
