Biography
Charles Day was born on October 19, 1914 in Colville , Washington .
He started rowing while studying at the University of Washington in Seattle, was a member of the local Washington Haskis rowing team, took part in various student regattas several times, in particular, he won the championship of the Inter-University Rowing Association (IRA) twice in eight.
The highest success in rowing at the international level was achieved in the 1936 season, when he joined the main team of the American national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin . As part of the eight-wing oversized crew with the helmsman in the final, he overtook all his rivals, including more than half a second ahead of the closest pursuers from Italy, and thereby won the Olympic gold medal [1] .
Later he studied at a medical school. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy . He was a ship's doctor, took part in the hostilities in the South Pacific.
At the end of the war he returned to Seattle and became a practicing gynecologist .
He was a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer on May 26, 1969 in Seattle at the age of 47.
