Biography
Ralph Perches was born on July 11, 1916 in Newport , Washington .
He was engaged in rowing while studying at the University of California at Berkeley , was a member of the local California Golden Beers rowing team, and took part in various student regattas as a helmsman several times.
The highest success in rowing at the international level was achieved in the 1948 season, when he joined the main team of the American national team and thanks to a series of successful performances he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Summer Olympic Games in London . As part of the oversized crew of the eighth in the finals, he beat all his rivals, including over 10 seconds ahead of the closest pursuers from the UK, and thereby won the Olympic gold medal.
After graduating from university, he subsequently worked in the pulp and paper industry, and held senior positions at Zellerbach Corp.
He died on January 11, 2000 in the settlement of Sun City West , Arizona , at the age of 83.
