The movement was founded in the UK in May 2018. It all started with the fact that scientists have collected about a hundred signatures in support of the movement. [3] After that, the first active actions appeared. In November 2018, 5 bridges on the River Thames in London were blocked by traffic participants. [4] In April 2019, the organization captured 5 prominent locations in central London.
Drawing inspiration from the mass movements carried out by Occupy , Satyagraha Gandhi , Suffragista , Gene Sharp [5] , Martin Luther King and other members of the civil rights movement , Extinction Rebellion want worldwide support, citing the urgency of the fight against climate change. [6] [4] A large number of activists agreed to be arrested and go to prison, [7] like the tactics of the mass arrests of the Committee 100 in 1961.
The movement uses an hourglass in a circle, known as the symbol of extinction, which serves as a warning that the existence of many species is endangered. [8] [9]

Manifesto
Requirements
Extinction Rebellion sets the following goals on its official website: [10]
- The government must tell the truth about the climate situation and declare a state of emergency, developing solutions along with other civilian institutions as a matter of urgency.
- The government should take action now to prevent biodiversity loss and reduce gas emissions to zero by 2025.
- The government should create a Civic Assembly on Climate and Environmental Justice and subsequently focus on its decisions.
Stated Principles
XR states the following on its website and explains in a declaration: [11]
- We must have a common vision of the future - the creation of a world in which future generations can live.
- We set our mission to mobilize 3.5% of the population in order to achieve a change in the system, using ideas like “momentum-driven organizing”.
- We need a healthy culture to build a healthy and flexible society in the future.
- We openly call upon ourselves and this toxic system to leave the comfort zone and take action leading to change.
- We value thinking and exploring issues that follow actions and lead to planning for future actions. We draw experience and ideas from other movements and events.
- We welcome everyone who is actively working to create a safe and accessible world.
- We are actively reducing the influence of power - we are destroying its hierarchical structures for more equal participation.
- We avoid accusations and humiliations - we live in a toxic system, but none of us individually should be blamed.
- We are a non-violent organization - we use non-violent strategies and tactics as the most effective way to achieve change.
- We are based on autonomy and decentralization — collectively we create the structures we need to challenge power. Anyone who follows these stated principles and values can act on behalf of RisingUp! [12]
Support
On October 26, 2018, about 100 academicians signed a manifesto calling for action in support of the movement. [3] On December 9, 2018, the second open letter was published with the signatures of a hundred more scientists. [13]
In addition, the community received letters of support from such figures as actress Emma Thompson , Greta Thunberg , James Hansen - a NASA scientist, as well as linguist and social activist Noam Chomsky . [14]
Actions in Russia
On July 17, 2019, in Moscow, the activists of the movement posted a slogan with the symbol of extinction “The Clock is Ticking” on top of the street clock at the turn to Pravda Street in Moscow. The rally was held in front of the building of the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, and the main demand of the activists was a call for the media not to gloss over the problem of the climate crisis. [15] Activists reported on the action in their instagram. [sixteen]
Worldwide Actions
Australia's Extinction Rebellion announced "Declaration Day" March 22, 2019 In Melbourne , Adelaide , Sydney and Brisbane . Demonstrators gathered and protested with demands on the government and the media to recognize and declare a state of emergency on climate. On April 15, the XR group occupied part of the parliament. [17]
On April 15, XR activists seized the International Criminal Court in The Hague , forming a chain, after which they were arrested. [18] Similar actions were organized by the XR groups in Berlin , Heidelberg , Brussels , Lausanne , Madrid [19] , Denver and Melbourne . [20] In New York, on April 17, a group of 300 people gathered at the New York City Hall with a demand to declare a state of emergency on climate. After about 60 people were arrested for occupying the street and putting up posters on street lamps. [21] [22] Later in June, the “state of emergency” stated in the requirements was announced in New York. [23]
On Friday, April 19, XR activists blocked a rail link on one of the branches in Brisbane . [24]
Public Support
The study, which was conducted in London during the April protests, showed that 46% of the public support the movement, [25] nevertheless, further polls showed a change in opinion in favor of 52% against the actions of the organization, the reason most often stated violation of urban transport in April 17 protests. [26] [27]
In May 2019, Roger Hallam and another 8 people spoke as candidates representing independent climate leaders in the European Parliament elections in London and south-west England. [28] [29] They won 7,416 votes out of 3,917,854 in the last constituencies. [30] [31]
In June 2019, 1000 health care professionals in the UK and around the world, including professors, well-known public figures in medicine, former presidents, and colleges, called for civil disobedience caused by the “sadly inadequate” actions of the authorities regarding climate policy. They called on politicians and journalists to acknowledge the urgency of the climate situation and move on to action. They supported the wave of school movements and Extinction Rebellion. [32]
Criticism
Some criticize the movement for unrealistic demands. [33] The Organization of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit , which supports their persistent actions and demands, calls the terms that XR insists on an ambition that technically, economically and politically has absolutely no chance of being implemented. They calculated that in order to achieve zero carbon emissions before 2025, flights must be completely stopped and 38 million vehicles must stop moving. In addition, 26 million gas boilers should cease to operate in the next 6 years. [34]
