The picture is a bust portrait of Major-General Boris Vladimirovich Poluektov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Poluektov commanded a battalion in the Life Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment , temporarily commanded the entire regiment in the Battle of Borodino . During the foreign campaigns of 1813 and 1814 he distinguished himself in the battles of Bautzen and Kulm , he was promoted to major general . Then he was given command of the Moscow Grenadier Regiment , at the head of which he distinguished himself in the battles of La Rothiere and Arcy-sur-Habe , as well as during the capture of Paris . In the campaign of the Hundred Days he blocked the fortress of Toul [2] .
He is depicted in a general's uniform, introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817, with a coat over his shoulders. On the left, a Star of the Order of St. Anne , 1st Class, with diamonds; on the neck of the cross of the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle , 2nd degree; on the side of the uniform there are crosses of the orders of St. John of Jerusalem and St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree (worn in violation of the rules of wearing - the Russian orders must be located above the foreign order); the cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, silver medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew's Ribbon , bronze noble medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the Vladimir ribbon , the star of the Order of St. Vladimir the 2nd degree, to the right sewn cross of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and under it Kulmsky cross [3] . Signed on the frame: B.V. Poluektov 1st, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Committee of the General Staff for Certification of Semiectures was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on July 22, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. At this time, Poluektov was commanded by the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Grenadier Division, stationed in the Kingdom of Poland and on July 31 of the same year a letter was sent from the Inspector Department of the Military Ministry informing about the upcoming Dow trip to Warsaw and asking to meet with the artist. The portrait depicts the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree, by which the Semiects was awarded on December 7, 1823, [4] and, accordingly, it is considered that it was written after this date. However, the Dow's fee for this portrait was paid on April 25, 1823 - on this basis, A. A. Podmaso put forward a version that there could have been an earlier portrait of Poluektov with the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree. The finished portrait was accepted into the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [5] .
In the collection of the Pushkin Museum in Moscow there is another version of the portrait. It differs from the gallery slightly smaller size, a different arrangement of orders (the star of the Order of St. Vladimir, the embroidered cross of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and the Kulm Cross are placed vertically one below the other) and the signature of the artist and the author’s date " 1825 " (oil on canvas, 69 × 61 cm; inventory number Ж-3164) [6] . Also added to the awards is the medal “For the Capture of Paris” , by which Semiects was awarded on March 19, 1826 [4] - the presence in the portrait of this medal contradicts the author's dating, but it is possible that the medal was added later. The circumstances of the creation of this version of the portrait and its receipt in the museum are not installed.
In the 1840s, a lithograph was made from the portrait by I.Pesotsky in the workshop of I.A. Klukvin from a portrait, published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [7] .
