The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Yegor Maximovich Pillar from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

During the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Pillar was the chief of the 34th Jäger Regiment and commanded the 3rd Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division, distinguished himself in the defense of Smolensk , and was promoted to major general for the Battle of Borodino ; Further, he particularly distinguished himself in the Tarutino battle and in the battle of Red . In the overseas campaigns of 1813 and 1814 he distinguished himself in the battle of Bauzen , then he led the 17th Infantry Division and led it into the attack in the Battle of the Peoples near Leipzig . He completed his participation in the wars against Napoleon by storm of the outskirts of Paris in 1814 [2] .

Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd class; on board the uniform are the crosses of the Prussian orders of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree and Pur le Merit , as well as the cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and a star of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree [3] on the right chest. Signature on the frame: E. M. Pillar, General Mayor .

On August 7, 1820, the Pillar Attestation Committee of the General Staff was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on October 17, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. Pillar himself, since November 1817, was retired and lived on his estate in the province of Estonia , after the imperial command, he probably came to St. Petersburg and posed for Dow. The Dow fee was paid on March 13 and November 27, 1823. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
