The picture is a chest portrait of Lieutenant General Ivan Davydovich Panchulidzev from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

During the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Panchulidzev was the chief of the Chernigov Dragoon Regiment and commanded the 1st Brigade of the 4th Reserve Cavalry Corps, was in many battles with the French, and especially distinguished himself in the Battle of Borodino and near Krasny . In the Overseas Campaign of 1813 he distinguished himself in the battle of Lutzen , for which he was promoted to lieutenant general ; in the campaign of 1814 he fought in France [2] .

Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd class; on board the uniform crosses of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree and the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , a gold cross “For the capture of Ochakov” and a star of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree [3] on the right chest. Signature on the frame: I.D. Panchulidzev 1st, General Lieutenant .

On August 7, 1820, the Panchulidzev General Staff Certification Committee was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on August 10, 1821, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on April 25, 1823 and December 29, 1824. September 7, 1825 the finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage [4] . Since Panchulidzev died at the beginning of 1815, there must be a portrait prototype on which the Dow was based - this portrait is unknown to modern researchers.
