Secretary of the Florentine Republic ( Italian. Cancelliere di Firenze ) - an important position in the bureaucratic apparatus of the Florentine Republic . Although he was not officially a member of the elected political government of the republic, unlike the gonfalonier or nine members of the Signoria , this post was roughly equivalent to the head of the civil service in some countries, and its holder had significant political influence. The secretaries were some of the most famous scholars, political thinkers and humanists of the Renaissance.
