Biography

Born October 15 ( 27 ), 1883 in the village. Verbilki (according to other sources, in the village of Kushki, near the village of Verbilki, Dmitrovsky district, Moscow province , the Russian Empire (now Russia) in a noble family: father, Nikolai Nikolayevich Zilov - owner Kushek, mother - Maria Pavlovna, (nee Gardner). He grew up in the family estate of his grandmother, Elizabeth Nikolaevna Gardner (nee Leman), the last owner of a porcelain factory in Verbilki [2] .

He graduated from a factory school in Verbilki, then a German school in Moscow, after he studied at the gymnasium classes of the Lazarevsky Institute of Oriental Languages , where in 1905 he passed the exam for matriculation externally. In 1906 he married Natalya Brunovna Bykhold (1886-1966), who became his muse (children were born: Anna (1907), Alexey (1909) and Irina (1913)). He entered the Economics Department of the Law Faculty of Moscow University and graduated in 1913 with a second degree diploma [2] [4] .

Since 1918 he worked in the field of public education, was in charge of the orphanage in Ivanovo-Voznesensk . In the 1920s, he was an employee of the newspapers Rabochiy Krai (Ivanovo-Voznesensk) and Pravda. In 1934, he was not admitted to the Writers' Union [2] .

January 24, 1937 died of pneumonia [2] .

Creativity

He made his debut in 1904 [3] - two of his poems were published in the Baku newspaper “New Review” [2] , until 1914 he was published in a number of magazines: “New Review” (Baku), “Education”, “Russian Thought”, “ Magazine for all ”,“ Monthly magazine ”,“ Bulletin of Europe ” [4] . The first collection of poems (mainly landscape lyrics (“Zlat Zame Ruchey”, “Mother”, “Azure Tales”, “Birches”, “In the Monastery”), household sketches (“In the Kitchen”, “Screw”), family and childhood ( “Fierce”, “God”, “Our little Lulu”) [2] , etc.) came out in 1908, the next in 1911 [3] .

After the October Revolution, he published a number of collections describing the post-revolutionary life: “The Crow in the Trumpet” (1924), “Stories on the Go” (1925), “Underground Residents” (1930), etc. He wrote a number of works for children about the nature of things and phenomena ( May and Oktyabrina, 1924, Millionniy Lenin, 1926, Riddles-Folds, 1927, etc.), was actively published in children's magazines (Protalinka, Svetlyachok, Family and School, after the revolution in Murzilka, Twinkles, Sparkle, Zorka [2] ). He published short stories from the life of L. N. Tolstoy and A. S. Pushkin: “Short stories about Tolstoy” (1934, foreword by M. Tsyavlovsky, 2nd ed., 1937); “Returned Pushkin” (1938, posthumously) [3] .

In total, he published three books of poetry, two collections of short stories, a number of books of a mass nature and about fifty children's books [4] .
