The Alexandrian Archbishopric of the Alexandrian Orthodox Church . The diocese of the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all of Africa (since 2004 - Theodore II ).
Cathedral: Annunciation Cathedral in Alexandria.
The first Orthodox bishop of Alexandria of Egypt - the then capital of Egypt , one of the leading religious, scholars, cultural and political centers of the ancient world - became the apostle and evangelist Mark . The primacy of the Alexandria pulpit over other Egyptian ones was affirmed in the early period, along with the establishment of the Local Churches .
Despite the decline of the Patriarchate of Alexandria due to the falling away of many believers in Monophysitism , and then with the Arab conquest of the 7th century , the Alexandria Chair did not interrupt, remaining the focus of the life of the Alexandrian Orthodox Church. After the 15th and until the 19th centuries, the Alexandrian pulpit remained the only active diocese of the entire Local Alexandrian Church, although there were sometimes several titular bishops under the patriarchs.
For the year 2000 , the pope and patriarch of Alexandria, as the diocesan bishop, were directly in charge of his cathedral city - Alexandria with its environs - as well as a representative office in Cairo .
