Opel Omega A, which appeared in 1986, replaced the Opel Rekord . In the performance of "luxury" it was called the Opel Senator , which was distinguished by bumpers, lighting, rich equipment and the absence of diesel engines. Opel Rekord also had a twin brother, Senator A. Therefore, we can say that in 1986 Omega A and Senator B appeared. There were complete sets with a fully electronic instrument board, as in the Opel Kadett GSi .

In 1994, the second generation of the Opel Omega, which no longer had a luxury modification, appeared on the conveyor. In 1999, facelift was made. Omega B received a modified interior, bumpers, lighting and new equipment. The range of engines has also been updated. In April 2004, the production of the model was discontinued without a direct successor.

Salon Opel Omega B

The model is a continuation of the Opel Omega A and was produced from 1994 to 2003. The exterior, interior, aerodynamics and car equipment were improved. In the American market, it was called Cadillac Catera and was produced from 1996 to 2001.

To the above list of maximum equipment Omega A were added: dual-zone climate control, headlight auto-adjustment, full-time xenon light, rear sunshade, 4 + 1 music system with CD changer, leather interior. The maximum equipment of the Opel Omega B was marked as MV6 and came with a 3.0 liter V6 engine. or 2.5 liter turbodiesel. In 1999, the Omega B was restyled [1] . In terms of appearance, the shape of the trunk and rear lights (they have become more modern), as well as the hood and front body kit (grille, for example, has now become an integral part of the hood). Also, body parts were additionally processed in the factory (galvanized), due to which the corrosion resistance of the body and its parts increased. The main changes have undergone a line of engines and the interior.

Engines “squandered” a bit (increased working volume) and eliminated the “childhood” problems inherent in previous Ecotec engine models (for example, the ignition module and spark plug wires on the V6 were replaced with two-component modules that contacted directly with the spark plugs) . Diesel engines of the last years of release were equipped with the Common Rail system. At the same time, due to the fact that Opel did not have a suitable 2.5-liter diesel engine, these engines were purchased from BMW.

The interior, as well as the exterior, was modernized - more chopped lines, a little more plastic, buttons and indicators. There was a full multifunctional steering wheel. The on-board computer could be ordered in color with navigation. The maximum equipment began to include light and rain sensors.

In addition, in 2000 they planned to introduce a new Chevrolet Corvette Y57XE engine: a 16-valve V-shaped 8-cylinder engine with a 4-speed automatic transmission, which received the AR60 index. The version with this engine was positioned as a competitor to the BMW E39 , Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class due to the significantly lower price. Brochures were even printed, but a few weeks before being put on the conveyor, Opel management abandoned this engine, motivating it with a weak cooling system that could not provide this engine with reliable operation in conditions of high-speed German autobahns [2] . In fact, the true reason for the cancellation was the reluctance of GM Europe management to create a competitor to the Cadillac marketed in the European market, coupled with doubts about the ability of the new Omega V8 to increase sales.

Cadillac Catera

Cadillac Catera (2000-2001)

Cadillac Catera is the badge-engineering version of the Opel Omega B for the US market, presented under the luxury brand GM Cadillac in the fall of 1996 with a base price of $ 29,995 ($ 46.803 in terms of the current exchange rate). It differs in slightly modified appearance and rich equipment (already in the base there are ABS , TCS , dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, bucket-shaped front seats, etc.), in a sense being the successor to the “premium” version of the Opel Senator. It was aggregated exclusively with the 3.0L V-shaped six-cylinder L81 engine (Opel X30XE classification) and automatic transmission.

Cadillac Catera (2000-2001), rear view

In 2000, the car underwent a slight restyling , in addition to cosmetic changes to the interior and exterior, side airbags, additional HID headlights and suspension settings were changed (stiffness increased).

The total sales for five years amounted to about 95 thousand cars.
