The picture is a bust portrait of Infantry General Baron Fabian Vilhelmovich von der Osten-Sacken from the Winter Palace Military Gallery [1] .

During the Patriotic War of 1812, Lieutenant-General Baron Osten-Sacken commanded a reserve corps in the 3rd Observatory Army, covered Admiral Chichagov ’s army movement towards Berezina , and fought against the auxiliary Austro-Saxon corps in Volyn . In foreign campaigns of 1813 and 1814, he distinguished himself during the capture of Warsaw and the blockade of Czestochowa , then fought in Silesia and was promoted to generals from infantry for the difference in the battle on the Katzbach River . He further distinguished himself in the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig and at La Rothiere , after the capture of Paris by the Allies was the interim governor-general of the capital of France [2] .

It is depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817, and the St. Andrew's ribbon was slung over his shoulder. Silver medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew's Ribbon , bronze noble medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the Vladimir ribbon and stars of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called , St. George 2nd Class and St. Vladimir 2nd degree (the artist mistakenly did not depict the neck crosses of the Order of St. George of the 2nd degree and St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree, therefore the stars of these orders are easily confused with the 1st degree). Right on the background near the shoulder, just below the epaulet, the artist's signature: painted from nature by Geo Dawe RA [3] . Signed on the frame: Baron F.V. Fonder-Oost-Saken 1st, Gen. From Infanteri .

By the beginning of the 1820s, Baron Oosten-Sacken was commander-in-chief of the 1st army and resided permanently in Mogilev at the place of deployment of the army headquarters [4] . It is known that in May 1820 he came to St. Petersburg for service, where he met with Dow. On September 1 of the same year, his finished portrait, as well as portraits of I. O. Witt , A. F. Langeron, and P. K. Sukhtelen , was shown at the exhibition of the Imperial Academy of Arts in the Tauride Palace [5] . The portrait was accepted into the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [6] .

In the Hermitage collection there is another portrait of F. V. Osten-Saken by Dow, his main differences from the gallery are a somewhat different color palette, slightly increased size and, most importantly, the artist’s signature and date (two lines): Geo Dawe pinxt 1822 . Its dimensions are 72 × 63.4 cm; inventory number is GE-6467 [7] . On the back there is an old sticker with the inscription: Oten-Saken number 9 . This portrait was owned by the Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich and was kept in the Mikhailovsky Palace until 1894. After the redemption of the Mikhailovsky Palace to the treasury and the device of the Russian Museum in it, this version of the portrait of FV Osten-Sacken was in the mansion of Countess Charles, after the October Revolution was nationalized and in 1923 transferred to the Hermitage [8] .

In 1823, Messrs Colnaghi commissioned an engraving by G. Dow with the date of January 1, 1823, by the order of the St. Petersburg bookseller S. Florent. An imprint of this engraving is also available in the Hermitage collection (paper, mezzotint, 59 × 46.5 cm, inventory number ERG-454) [9] . Which of the two versions of the portrait served as a prototype for the engraving has not been established, D. A. Rovinsky believes that the gallery version served as a prototype [10] .

  • A portrait version that belonged to Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich

  • Engraving G. Dow
