Early years
Kam was born on November 2, 1921 in Copenhagen , Denmark [1] [2] . He was the second of six children of agent Rasmus Hansen Kama (born 1891 in Aunslev, Funen [3] ) and his wife Inger nee Hermansen (born 1897 in Copenhagen [4] ) [5]
Young Kam was a member of the DNSAP youth faction (NSU), where he was a close associate of King Christian Frederick von Schalburg , one of his so-called "bloody boys." [6] . In 1939, Kam joined the Levy army in Copenhagen with the name Søren Kam [7] .
Kam joined the SS in June 1940 and served in the 5th SS Viking Panzer Division on the Eastern Front [8] . He was transferred to the SS School “Junkerschule Bad Tölz” and was appointed Untersturmführer SS.
The Kama family stayed in the villa after he moved out until his father sold it in 1947 [9] [10] . In the same year, Kama's older brother removed his phone from the phone book, and two years later his father did the same [11] .
From May 1 to September 2, 1943, Kam headed the school in Höveltegaard, responsible for training new members of the SS Schalburg volunteer corps . The first six weeks he taught 50-70 draftees [12] .
According to Efraim Zuroff of the Simon Wiesenthal Center , in August 1943, Kam participated as a Waffen-SS soldier in a robbery during which records of the birth of the children of the Jewish community in Denmark were stolen. In doing so, he guaranteed that the German dossier on Danish Jews was as complete as possible, in preparation for an attempt to arrest and deport them in October of this year. Søren Kam denied this charge until his death in 2015 [13] .
