Biography

He made his first steps toward his sporting achievements in the quiet village of Linstead, St. Catherine County, Jamaica . Asaph was brought up in strictness. Parents - Reverend William and Sislin Powell - did not allow children to go to dances and concerts. The discipline in the family was very tough, but she helped them raise Asaf and the five older brothers. Asafa started practicing athletics and football at the age of 9, Asafa already ran the fastest at 100, 200 and 400 meters in high school "Charlmount". Out of respect for his parents, Asaf went to university in Jamaica's capital, Kingston , rejecting the offers of American universities. Here he lives and trains, he goes to church every week and lives with his parents and brothers Donovan (formerly a participant in the Olympic Games and manager Asafa), Nigel and Ricardo.

On January 25, 2017, the IOC deprived the Jamaica team, including Powell, of the gold medals at the Beijing Olympics for winning the men's 4x100 meters relay after it turned out that a repeated analysis of Nesta Carter’s samples revealed traces of the forbidden drug methylhexanamine.
