History

From the end of the 18th century, almost from the very beginning of the founding of Sevastopol, the hill was chaotically built up by poorer residents of the city, who were unable to settle on the main streets below, at its foot. The hill did not have a clear planning and a clear architectural appearance, and many buildings were reduced without any permission, for which it was nicknamed the "Ridge of Lawlessness."

In 1839, the master plan for the development of Sevastopol was approved, which provided for the hill a complete demolition of old buildings and new buildings with a clear planning of the streets. In the 1840s, work was carried out on this plan. Most of the buildings of that period were destroyed during the Crimean and World War II, but the street planning created at that time has survived to the present day.

Nowadays, the hill is built up in most post-war two- and three-storey houses in the style of Soviet neo-classicism (the so-called “Stalin”). Among the surviving pre-war buildings are the most valuable:

  • House Volokhov , 1840 and
  • Tower of the Winds , 1849
  • Vladimirsky Cathedral , 1848-1888
  • Peter and Paul Cathedral , 1888
  • Konstantinovskoe real school, 1876. Currently Grammar school number 3. It has some features of the Gothic style.
  • Richter House, st. Suvorov 28, 1912
