The population of the municipality (County Monroe) is 1,039,028 people (2005), being the third largest in the state. The population of Rochester itself is 212.5 thousand (2004). The urban agglomeration belongs to the megalopolis Megalopolis Great Lakes .

The headquarters of Eastman Kodak , Bausch & Lomb and Xerox corporations are located in the city - thanks to the abundance of optical industry enterprises, Rochester has a reputation as the "optical capital of the world." [4] The University of Rochester (UoR) and the Eastman School of Music , which is a part of it, operate in the city, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra is based, in addition to the university, the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) operates.
