Biography
Born on August 28 (September 8 according to the new style) in 1774.
He was a Vologda merchant of the 2nd and 3rd guilds, then a St. Petersburg merchant of the 3rd guild. Traded in the forest since 1796. He was engaged in charity work: for a project to clean the Kronstadt harbors (1803) and a donation for restoration after the fire of the Peter the Great Palace in Kronstadt , he received a gold medal “For Useful” on the Alexander Ribbon (1804) and a gold-embroidered caftan (1805). [2] The Vologda Oblast State Archive has kept a list of Vologda merchants who were presented with a bronze medal on the ribbon of the Order of St. Anne for donations “to the militia against the enemies of the monetary sum in 1812”. [3]
I became interested in filigranology (an area of study of marking signs on paper in order to date texts written on this paper that do not have a creation date). I became the author of the first special work in Russia on this subject: “Experience in ancient Russian diplomacy, or A way to find out time on paper, in which ancient manuscripts are written ” (1824) [4] , which became a manual on watermarks. [3] Another name for this manuscript is “The Discovery of Knowing Ancient Books on Brands on Paper and Other Means About the Time of Their Writing in Different Centuries” . This work of Ivan Laptev was highly appreciated by A. Kh. Vostokov ; the filigree revealed by Laptev were included by K. Ya. Tromonin in the album “Explanations of Signs Visible in Writing Paper ...” (1844). After the publication of his book, Laptev, along with the children, continued to identify filigree, collecting a collection of over 2 thousand characters. For 40 years, he collected and studied manuscripts and early printed books. [2]
Also, Ivan Petrovich Laptev collected a valuable numismatic collection, which included silver coins of the grand and specific princes, rare coins of the 17th – 19th centuries. The historian and paleographer I.P. Sakharov wrote about his collection: “The best coins were purchased from the collections of the Duke of Wirthemberg and Prince. Vyazemsky. " [2]
In the last years of his life, I.P. Laptev suffered from rheumatism. He died on June 21 (July 3, according to a new style) in 1838 in St. Petersburg and was buried at the George cemetery of Bolshaya Okhta (now Bolsheokhtinsky cemetery ). [2]
After his death, manuscripts and old-printed books were sold at auction in 1840, and coins in 1845. [2]
