Biography
Born in Cuneo on July 11, 1892, into the family of Alfredo Gedini and Clotilde, née Margarlitelli. Primary music education in his hometown, learning to play the piano and organ. He continued his studies at the Conservatory in Turin, where he studied cello and studied harmony and counterpoint until 1908. Entered the conservatory in Bologna, where he studied with Marco Enrico Bossi . Completed education in 1911.
Gedini began his career as an orchestra conductor, but soon devoted himself mainly to composing and teaching. From 1918 to 1937 he was a professor of composition at the Turin Conservatory. From 1937 to 1941 - at the Parma Conservatory. Then he taught at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, the director of which he was from 1951 to 1962. The composer’s disciples were Marcello and Claudio Abbado, Luciano Berio, Alberto Bruni-Tedeschi, Niccolò Castiglioni, Fiorenzo Carpi, Carlo Pinelli and Liliana Renzi.
Gedini was also the organizer of the music weeks in Siena and a member of the Italian section of the International Society of Contemporary Music. In 1952, he received the Italian RAI Prize for the radio play "Lord of the Underworld" on the libretto of Franco Antonichelli. The author of numerous compositions of vocal and instrumental music, Ghedini kept creative activity until his death in Nervi on March 25, 1965. Nowadays the conservatory in Cuneo bears his name, as well as the streets in Turin and Milan.
