Events
- Robert Hooke revealed the wording of the “ law of elasticity ” he discovered. In 1676, he encrypted the wording (for affirming scientific priority) in the form of a Latin anagram : “ ceiiinosssttuv ”, which in fact meant: “ ut tensio, sic vis ” ( what kind of force, such a stretch ) [1] [2] .
Publications
- Edmund Halley published the world's first stellar catalog for the southern hemisphere , covering 341 stars [3] .
- Christian Huygens in his “ Treatise on Light ” formulated the Huygens – Fresnel principle, most important for wave optics, [4] .

- April 14 - Abraham Darby , English metallurgist and industrialist. For the first time in the history of blast furnace production , coal coke was used as fuel, which was a significant step forward; today coke is the main fuel in all blast furnaces in the world (died in 1717 ) [5] .
- July 16 - Jacob German , a Swiss mathematician, member of four academies of sciences, who opened on November 2 (13), 1725, the very first meeting of the newly created Petersburg Academy of Sciences (he died in 1733 ) [6] .
- October 27 - Pierre Remon de Montmore , French mathematician (died in 1719 ).
- November 26 - Jean-Jacques de Meran , French geophysicist, astronomer and chronobiologist who discovered circadian rhythms of plants and showed the cosmic origin of the auroras (died in 1771 ).
