.
Symbols
The coat of arms of the city of Saratov is a traditional heraldic shield . It depicts three silver sterlet, meaning "Great this country abundance of such fish." Sterlets are oriented from the upper corners of the shield and the middle of the lower edge with their heads towards the center of the composition, forming the Greek letter “ipsilon” , symbolizing “choosing a worthy path at the crossroads of vital roads”. The sterlet located in the upper part of the shield is shown with its backs to each other, and the sterlet located in the lower part is shown with its back to the left of the viewer.
History
The appearance of sterlet on the modern shield is associated with the main occupation of the Saratovites - fishing. This activity was necessary for survival and sustenance. In the diaries of the German geographer and explorer Adam Olearius , a small story about Saratov is preserved. Sailing past the city in 1636, he noted in his travel notes that Russian people in most cases eat fish, not meat. Francis Santi designed the coat of arms in azure . The hue symbolizes the blue water of the great Volga and its vastness. The fish on the shield form the Greek letter ipsilon. This is the philosophical theory of decent ways on the road of life.
The historical description of Saratov read:
In the blue field there are three sterlet, meaning this country's great abundance of such fish.
—It was most highly granted on August 23, 1781 by the decree of Catherine II the Great, together with the emblems of other cities of the Saratov governorate ( PSZ , vol. XXI, No. 15215). Then, under the USSR, the heraldic description changed:
At the bottom of the shield is an image of three silver sterlets on an azure field, preserving the drawing of the old coat of arms of the city of Saratov. In the middle of the upper part of the shield is placed on a red box the symbol of Soviet power - the golden sickle and hammer.
—Approved on November 15, 1968, Resolution No. 20 of the Saratov City Council following the results of the competition for creating the coat of arms of Saratov announced on March 29, 1967 in the Kommunist newspaper [3] [4] .
