Nakhchivan Musical Drama Theater

At the end of the 19th century , in 1883, at the initiative of the playwright Einalybek Sultanov in Nakhichevan, the first performance was staged in the house of Haji Najaf Zeynalov based on the story of the playwright Jalil Mammadkulizadeh "Monsieur Jordan, a learned botanist and dervish Mastalishakh, the famous sorcerer . " This performance laid the foundation for the Nakhichevan Musical Drama Theater. In the formation and further development of the theater, M.T.Sidgi, G. Sharifov, J. Mammadkulizade himself, J.P. Sultanov, M.S. Ordubadi, M. Kaziev, R. Takhmasib, B. Nakhichevan also played a large role.

In 1922, the theater received the status of the State Drama Theater ^[2] . In the future, performances based on plays by Huseyn Javid (“Sheikh Sanan”), J. Jabbarly (“Aydin”, “Diamond”, “Seville”, “Yashar”), S. Vurgun (“Vagif”) and others On the stage of the theater, along with the works of Azerbaijani playwrights, world classics were also staged.

During the Second World War, performances were also staged based on the patriotic works of I. Efendiev, Anar, I. Safarli, Elchin, R. Ibrahimbekov, N. Hasanzade.

In 1965, the theater was named after the playwright Jalil Mammadkulizade.

The building of the theater was designed by the Azerbaijani architect Hasan Majidov ^[3] .

In 2008, by order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan ^[4] , as well as by order of the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic ^[5] , the theater’s 125th anniversary was held.

In 2012, the renovated theater building was commissioned.
