Gameplay and Synopsis
Golf Story - role - playing , sports , adventure game . According to its plot, the unlucky golfer has not played golf for 20 years, and now he is trying to remember the time when he did it. As described in the game, his father instilled in him a love of golf. The game is positioned as a traditional RPG [comm 1] , but instead of participating in battles in it you need to play golf. The player is free to explore eight areas [1] (some initially closed). On the territory of each of them side quests [comm 2] and mini-games are available, through which you can earn experience and money. They allow you to improve player skills and buy new equipment. In addition to mini-games and side quests, the player is given the opportunity to visit the golf course and participate in a game whose goal is to make the ball appear in each of 9 holes. However, initially this game mode is not available: you need to complete certain tasks. The direction of impact depends on 3 clicks [2] : the first click is needed to aim, the second to determine the force of impact, the third to determine the accuracy of the impact.
Even at the moment when the player is not completing any task, he can hit the ball at any time and play golf. To players more often recalled this opportunity, secret or difficult goals were added to the game, which can be discovered by exploring the area. They can bring money or experience points, and sometimes even discover new territories that can be explored. As in other RPGs, the player receives a reward for exploring the territory, searching for containers and communicating with non-player characters . So, some non-player characters suggest where the cache is located, which can be dug up with a special blade.
In addition to regular golf, there are other game options in the game: disc golf , minigolf, and a video game about golf. There is also a training ground and the opportunity to play bowling [2] .
Design and release
Initially, the Golf Story was developed as a game for Wii U. Two people worked on it, it was supposed to be the first Sidebar Games game for home consoles [3] . Due to the fact that they worked on the game for a long time and the theme of the game expanded, it turned out that the game will be released on Nintendo Switch , and not on Wii U , the production of which was stopped. Nintendo helped Sidebar Games make the game available on Nintendo Switch [3] . Golf Story was influenced by other video games, in particular the version of the game for Game Boy Color [3] . Some of the plans of the developers were not implemented: there was not enough time [3] . Sidebar Games did not plan to port the game to other platforms [3] .
Golf Story was released in North America, Europe and Australia on September 28, 2017 [4] , in Japan on March 9, 2018, the game was released by Flyhigh Works [5] [6] . A copy of the game on physical media was also released, it became available in North America on September 28, 2018 [7] [8] .

Expert reviews about the game are generally good. Eurogamer expert Martin Robinson found this to be “one of the best games you'll find on the Nintendo Switch console this year” [2] . According to Gita Jackson, who wrote for Kotaku , “The Golf Story is an RPG on the Nintendo Switch that you have to play” [16] .
Most reviews indicated that the game is good enough, but some of them claimed that the RPG did not have game mechanics, and some reviewers considered the game unoriginal [17] [18] .
In the Eurogamer article “ Top 50 Games of 2017 ” ( Top 50 Games of 2017 ), Golf Story was in the 50th position [19] . According to an article by EGMNow , the game was in 24th place among the “25 best games of 2017” [20] .
Rewards
The game was nominated for the title of " Best Switch Game " ( Eng. Best Switch Game ) according to Destructoid , this happened as part of the Game of the Year Awards 2017 [21] .
