Marius de Romanus or Marius of Rome ( born Marius de Romanus ) is a character in the cycles “ Vampire Chronicles ” and “ New Vampire Chronicles ” written by Anne Rice . He is the main character of the book " Blood and Gold ." According to Anne Rice, the character was created after reading Don Juan ’s Teachings . Marius is a mentor and scientist, keeper of information and knowledge accumulated over the centuries.

Marius was born in 4 BC. e. in ancient Rome . He is the illegitimate son of a Roman patrician and a Celtic slave from Gaul . In his mortal years, he traveled through the Empire and other parts of the world, collecting the history of the world. In Rice's books, his appearance is described as follows: curly blond hair and cobalt- blue eyes, pale and hard, like marble , skin - after all, Marius is already more than two thousand years old, and the skin of vampires becomes paler over the years. I must say that in the film adaptation of the books “ Vampire Lestat ” and “ Queen of the Damned ” in the movie “ Queen of the Damned ” (where Marius played Vincent Perez ), the appearance of the vampire is completely different.
When Marius was about 40, he was abducted by druids who profess the cult of the god of the grove. Marius was destined to sacrifice to God, but he chose to make Marius a vampire (he himself was also a vampire, and by no means a deity), just before the annual festival of Samuinnu . The same god punished him to find out why other vampires, including himself, were scorched or even died, although they did not go out in the sun. Marius goes to Egypt , where he becomes the keeper of the first two vampires, Mother and Father .
For his two thousand years, Marius managed to visit many places. He lived in Antioch with Pandora two centuries after he became a caretaker. After parting with her, he moved to Rome, where he had quiet companions of Avicus and Mael . He went into hibernation for more than 50 years before Avicus and Mael awoke him, and all three sailed to Constantinople . There he met with Eudoxia. There they lived a short time before Marius again set off on travel alone, visiting many places. Then he again went into hibernation in 1200 , from which the Black Death awakened him. Due to what was happening around, he decided to go back to sleep.
Awakening in 1482 , he again visited Rome and Florence , before settling in Venice as a rich but strange gentleman, painting for his own pleasure. There he opened a shelter for talented boys. He also fell in love with the Venetian courtesan Bianca Solderini , found the mortal Amadeo, and lived there many years before the Children of Darkness (led by Santino ) destroyed his house, severely wounding Marius and stole Amadeo (who was already a vampire by that time). After that, Marius and Bianca, who helped him recover, and which he made a vampire, lived for some time in many towns in northern Europe before settling in Dresden . There, Marius found Pandora and unsuccessfully begged her to leave his companion Arjun and return to him. Because of this, Bianca left Marius. The last two places of residence of Marius were an island in the Aegean Sea and a place somewhere in the north.
Marius is an intelligent, wise and optimistic vampire, one of the oldest survivors, the Millennium Child. Due to the fact that he often drank blood from the late Akasha vampire queen, he became very strong and acquired some advanced abilities, including the ability to ignite (“Fire Gift”) and the ability to fly (“Cloud Gift”). He can also read thoughts with ease, as well as block his own thoughts from reading using the “Mental Gift”. Another of his abilities is Killing Gift.
Vampires created by Marius (in chronological order): Pandora, Amadeo, Bianca Solderini, Sybil and Benji . Marius drew the last two for Amadeo. In the movie Queen of the Damned , Marius is the creator of Lestat (in the book version, the creator of Lestat was Magnus ).
Marius loved easily and many for his long life: Avicus, Zenobia, Akasha, Botticelli , Bianca Solderini, Lestat. But the two great affections in his life were Pandora and Amadeo. However, he lost both lovers: Pandora left because of his hot temper and pride, and Amadeo was kidnapped by a religious fanatic vampire Santino.
Marius is a great artist and scientist, a fan of reading and the owner of several valuable libraries, though destroyed by fire.
