Alexandru Borza ( rum. Alexandru Borza ; May 21, 1887 , Alba-Iuli Austria-Hungary - September 3, 1971 , Cluj-Napoca ) - Romanian botanist , teacher , doctor of science, professor of botany at Babesh-Bolyai University (1919-1947). Member of the Romanian Academy (posthumously).

Biography
The son of an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army. In 1904-1908 he studied at the Theological Seminary in Budapest , then at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Geography of the University of Budapest (1908-1911), since 1913 - Doctor of Biological Sciences. In 1913-1914, he was an intern at the University of Breslau under the leadership of Ferdinand Pax .
Until 1919, the teacher in the schools of Transylvania . In 1919-1947 he lectured on botany at the University of Cluj .
In 1923, he founded and headed the Botanical Institute, worked as director of the Botanical Garden of the Cluj University (named after him in 1991) and the Museum of Botany in Cluj.
On his initiative, Retezat , the first national park in Romania (now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve ) was created in 1935.
He is the author of the ethnobotanical dictionary, which contains more than 11,000 Romanian plant names. He made a great contribution to the definition of certain plant species in Romania.
He organized the first congress of natural scientists in Romania (1931), was chairman of the Committee of Natural Monuments of Romania (1938). He initiated a law on nature conservation, adopted in 1930 by the Romanian parliament.
He was a member of many Romanian and foreign scientific societies, including the Honorary President of the International Botanical Congress in Paris .
He became a posthumous member of the Romanian Academy .
