Biography

Charles Grimes was born July 9, 1935 in Washington , USA .

He graduated from the Groton School . During his studies at Yale, he played football and basketball in his first two courses, and throughout the entire course of his studies he was seriously engaged in rowing. He was a member of the local Yale Bulldogs rowing team, repeatedly participated in various student regattas, in particular, he won a victory over the eight from Harvard, but lost to her at the traditional spring sprints regatta.

The highest success in rowing at the adult international level was achieved in the 1956 season, when he joined the main team of the American national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Summer Olympics in Melbourne . As part of the G-8 crew, he outranked all his rivals in the final, including being almost two seconds ahead of the closest pursuers from Canada, and thereby won the Olympic gold medal [1] .

After the Melbourne Olympics, Grimes no longer showed any significant results in rowing in the international arena.

After graduating from university in 1957, he entered Harvard Law School , where in 1960 he received a bachelor's degree in law. Subsequently, for some time he was engaged in law, then became an independent investor and financial advisor.

His wife, Jane Brown Grimes, served as president of the United States Tennis Association .

He died of pancreatic cancer on February 5, 2007 in New York at the age of 71 years [2] .
