The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Dmitry Petrovich Lyapunov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Lyapunov commanded the Pskov Infantry Regiment and the 1st Brigade of the 7th Infantry Division, distinguished himself during the defense of Smolensk , was fought as Major General for the Battle of Borodino, and then distinguished himself in street battles in Maloyaroslavets and near Krasnoye . During the Overseas Campaign of 1813, he fought in Poland and was commandant of Płock , in the summer of that year, due to a serious illness, he was forced to leave the army and went on vacation [2] .
Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817. On the neck there are crosses of the orders of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree and the Prussian Pur le Merit ; on the right on the chest is the Order of St. George of the 4th class and a silver medal "In Memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew's Ribbon [3] . Signature on the frame: D.P. Lyapunov, General Mayor . The chest cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class is erroneously depicted, instead a neck cross of this Order of the 3rd class should be shown, which Lyapunov was awarded on February 15, 1813 for the difference in the battle at Maloyaroslavets [4] .
On August 7, 1820, the Lyapunov Attestation Committee of the General Staff was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on May 19, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted.
Since Lyapunov died in the spring of 1821, the search for his portrait-prototype was undertaken. On August 23, 1822, the brother of D.P. Lyapunov, Major P.P. Lyapunov, wrote to the Inspectorate Department of the Ministry of War : “As a result of the publication established from this department, a portrait of the late brother of my major general and gentleman St. George of the 3rd degree, St. I have the honor of presenting the 3rd degree Vladimir and Prussian Purlemerit Dmitry Petrovich Lyapunov to this department and explaining that this portrait was painted when he was still a colonel, but after that he had the Order of St. George 3rd degree on his neck and a gold sword with an inscription courage . I ask you to return the portrait by writing off the copy to him in the city of Ryazhsk . "
The Dow fee was paid on March 13, 1823 and December 29, 1824. The finished portrait arrived at the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [5] . The location of the prototype portrait is unknown to modern researchers.
V.K. Makarov found this portrait completely devoid of similarity with typical Dow works [6] . The guardian of British painting in the Hermitage, E. P. Renne, supported his opinion [3] .
