The picture is a chest portrait in profile of Lieutenant General Count Ivan Andreevich Liven from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Earl Lieven commanded the 10th Infantry Division in the 3rd Western Army, and fought against the French in the Belarusian provinces. During the overseas campaigns of 1813 and 1814, he commanded a separate detachment in the corps of F.V. Osten-Sacken , for military distinctions in Poland and Silesia, was promoted to lieutenant general and further distinguished himself in the Battle of the Peoples near Leipzig and in the battle of La Rotier , where he was wounded [2] .

Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817, this is the artist’s mistake, since Lieven retired at the end of 1815 and wore a uniform of 1808 with two rows of buttons. On the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd class; on board the uniform are crosses of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree and the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , stars of the orders of St. Alexander Nevsky and St. Vladimir, 2nd degree, on the right chest. On the back of the painting are inscriptions: Cte Lieven and Geo Dawe RA pinxt [3] . Signature on the frame: I. A. Liven 3rd, General Lieutenant .

On August 7, 1820, the General Staff Certification Committee Lieven was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery” and on August 10, 1821, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow fee for the portrait was paid on November 10, 1821. The finished portrait arrived at the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
