The painting is a chest portrait of Major General Karl Fedorovich Levenshtern from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Levenstern was the chief of artillery of the 2nd Western Army, distinguished himself in the battle of Borodino in the battle of Krasnoye . During the overseas campaigns of 1813 and 1814 he commanded the reserve artillery and artillery of the Guards and Grenadier Corps, distinguished himself in the Battle of the Peoples near Leipzig and in the battle of Troyes [2] .
Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for artillery generals in 1820. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd class; on board the uniform are crosses of the Austrian Order of Leopold of the 2nd degree and the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; on the right side of the chest is the cross of the Bavarian Military Order of Maximilian Joseph 3rd degree (worn with a violation of the rules of wearing - a foreign order was to be worn after Russian awards), a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , a bronze noble medal “In memory of Patriotic War of 1812 ” on the Vladimir tape and star of the Order of St. Vladimir, 2nd degree [3] . Signature on a frame with an error in a surname: K. F. Livenshtern, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the General Staff Attestation Committee Levenstern was included in the list of “generals deserving to be painted in the gallery”, however, the actual decision to include his portrait took place earlier, since Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be written on March 23, 1820. The Dow fee was paid on April 14 and May 17, 1820. The finished portrait arrived at the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
In the 1840s, a lithography was made from the portrait in the workshop of IP Pesotsky , published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and his Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [5] .
