The picture is a chest portrait of Lieutenant General Sergei Nikolaevich Lansky from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Lanskoy was the chief of the Belarusian Hussar Regiment and commanded a separate detachment in the 3rd Western Army, after the battle on Berezina he led the cavalry in the corps of F.F. Vintsingerode . He participated in foreign campaigns of 1813 and 1814 , for the difference in the battle on Katzbach he was promoted to lieutenant general ; died in the battle of Kraon [2] .

Depicted in the general doloman of the Belarussian Hussar Regiment, introduced in 1809, a mentic is thrown over his shoulder, an Annensky ribbon with a lunar band over it is thrown over his shoulder. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there are crosses of the Order of St. George of the 3rd class and the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree, below their crosses of the Prussian Order of Pur le Merit and the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; on the right is a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and a star of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree. On the back of the picture there is an inscription: Lanskoy [3] . Signature on the frame: S. N. Lanskoy, General Lieutenant .

Despite the fact that on August 7, 1820, the Lanskoy Attestation Committee of the General Staff was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery”, the actual decision to include his portrait in the Military Gallery took place earlier: on May 16, 1820, Emperor Alexander I ordered to write his portrait. Since S.N. Lanskoy himself died in 1814, the Dow used a prototype portrait in his work. There is a letter from the real Privy Councilor V. S. Lansky , dated November 1821 and addressed to the duty general of the General Staff A. A. Zakrevsky , asking for the return of “two portraits of the late Lieutenant General Lansky, one of which is in miniature and the other also painted with oil paints " ; this letter indicates that on January 19, 1822, these prototype portraits were returned to the owner. The Dow fee was paid on November 10, 1821. The finished portrait arrived at the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .

The alleged portrait is a prototype of the work of an unknown artist. hermitage Museum

The Hermitage collection contains another portrait of S. N. Lansky, made by an unknown artist and dated to the beginning of the 1810s (oil on canvas, 62.5 × 51 cm, inventory number ERZh-160) [5] . Judging by the fact that on it Lanskoy is depicted with neck crosses of the orders of St. Anne of the 2nd degree with diamonds and St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree, this portrait was painted until 1813, when he was awarded the Orders of St. Anne 1st degrees and St. Vladimir 2nd degree [6] , which are shown in the gallery portrait (in the presence of the highest degrees of the order, the lower degrees were removed). This portrait entered the Hermitage in 1946 from the Ethnographic Museum of the Peoples of the USSR ; until 1928 it was kept in the Historical and Domestic Department of the State Russian Museum . According to the assumption of the custodian of Russian painting in the Hermitage, Yu. Yu. Gudymenko , he may be the prototype of a gallery portrait [7] . Perhaps it was he who was mentioned by V.S. Lanskoy in his letter.
