Biography

Information about Filofey Pirogov’s childhood and worldly life was practically not preserved, and the subsequent biographical data about him are very scarce and fragmentary; with the name of Philotheus, the life of Nile Stolbensky and the stichera and canon of this saint are preserved in the monuments [2] .

However, the mentioned works are only a small part of Filofei’s works and at one time he enjoyed some fame: at least when one of the reverends of the Monk Nil, the hieromonk and the founder of the Nilo-Stolobensky desert German , considering himself “ dissatisfied with the writings ” to compile the life of the Nile, decided to entrust this work to some other person, he was indicated to Philotheus [3] [2] .

In 1598, through Boldinsky hegumen Feoktista, Herman handed over to Philotheus his notes on the life and miracles created by the Nile, compiled on the basis of the stories of the surrounding inhabitants. According to these notes, adding to them the oral stories of the monks, Filofei Pirogov wrote the life of the Nile (not earlier than 1599); at the same time, Philotheos composed the stichera and canon of Nile. The further fate of Filofei is unknown, it is only known that he died in the 17th century [2] .

The story of Filofei about the life of this saint in 1667 was revised, and, decorated with rhetoric , lost its original simplicity. The initial words of the life compiled by Philotheus: “ Blessed be God the Father ... ”; initial words of the second edition: “ This Rev. Nile ... ” [4] .
