The championship will play the role of the qualifying tournament for the World Cup among youth teams in 2021 , which will get four of the best teams from Asia.
The champion title will be defended by Saudi Arabia .

The qualifying tournament for the final of the 2020 Asian Football Championship will take place from 2 to 10 November 2019 .

The qualifying round draw took place on May 9, 2019 at the headquarters of the AFC in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia . [2]
The teams were divided into 2 zones, 5 baskets each.
- West: 25 teams from West , Asia and South Asia , divided into 6 groups: 1 groups with 5 teams and 5 groups of 4 teams (AF Groups).
- East: 21 teams from ASEAN and East Asia , also divided into 5 groups: 1 group with 5 teams and 4 groups of 4 teams (GK Groups).

Determining team locations in a group round
In the group round, the place of the team is determined by the number of points scored: the more points, the higher the place. In case two or more teams have the same number of points, the following criteria are used:
- 1) a greater number of points scored in personal meetings between the applicants;
- 2) the best goal difference in personal meetings between the applicants;
- 3) a greater number of goals in personal meetings between applicants;
- 4) If, after applying the criteria from “a” to “c”, two teams still have equal indicators, to determine the final tournament position, the criteria from “a” to “c” are applied exclusively to matches involving these two teams. If this procedure does not allow making a final decision, then the criteria from “e” to “i” are used:
- 5) the best goal difference in all matches of the group stage;
- 6) a greater number of goals scored in all matches of the group stage;
- 7) penalty shootout if teams with the same indicators for all points play in the last match of the group stage
- 8) the behavior of teams in the spirit of "fair play" in the final tournament;
- 9) lots.
