The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Alexei Semenovich Kologrivov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Kologrivov was the chief of the 49th Jaeger Regiment and participated in many battles, including Borodino. During the overseas campaigns of 1813 and 1814 he distinguished himself in the Kulm battle and, shortly before the Battle of the Peoples near Leipzig, was promoted to major general ; at the beginning of 1814, at the battle of La Rotier, he was seriously wounded [2] .
Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817. On the neck there are crosses of the orders of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree and St. Anne of the 2nd degree with diamonds; on the right on the chest is a silver medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew's ribbon . On the back of the picture there is an inscription: Kologrivoff [3] . Signature on the frame: A. S. Kologrivov, General Mayor . For an unknown reason, the artist did not depict the breastplate of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, which Kologrivov was awarded on August 17, 1813 [4] .
On August 7, 1820, the Committee of the General Staff on the certification of the Kologrivs was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery" and on May 19, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. Since Kologrivov died back in 1818, the artist most likely used the prototype portrait, delivered from the relatives of Kologrivov. The Dow fee was paid on October 16, 1826 and April 22, 1828. The finished portrait arrived at the Hermitage on April 26, 1828. The previous delivery of the finished portraits was January 21, 1828, respectively, the picture dates from between these numbers [5] . The current location of the prototype portrait is unknown.
There was an author's repetition of a gallery portrait (or a very close copy), which was stored in the Great Gatchina Palace . His reproduction was placed in the publication of Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich “ Russian Portraits of the 18th and 19th Centuries ”, and it was mistakenly attributed to the brother of Alexei Semenovich Andrei Semenovich Kologrivov [6] , whose portrait is actually completely absent in the Military Gallery. The current location of this version of the portrait is unknown. In the book of A. A. Golombievsky about the Military Gallery, this mistake was repeated [7] .
