The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Alexander Yakovlevich Knyazhnin from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Knyazhnin commanded the 2nd Brigade of the 27th Infantry Division, participated in many battles to repulse Napoleon's invasion, was seriously wounded in the battle during the defense of the Shevardinsky Redoubt and, for distinction, was promoted to major general ; due to wounds, he left the army and did not participate in further hostilities [2] .

Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817, a fur coat was thrown over his shoulders. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree with diamonds; on board the uniform is a cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; on the right side of the chest there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, a silver medal "In Memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on the St. Andrew's Ribbon and a star of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree. On the back of the picture are inscriptions: Kniajnine 1st and Geo Dawe RA pinx t [3] . Signature on the frame: A. Ya. Knyazhnin 1st , General Mayor .

On August 7, 1820, the Princess General Committee of the General Staff was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery." The Dow fee was paid on December 17, 1819 and April 14, 1820. The finished portrait arrived at the Hermitage on September 7, 1825. Since the portrait depicts the cross and star of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree, which Knyazhnin was awarded on February 12, 1823, the gallery portrait was completed after this date [4] .

In the 1840s, in the workshop of I. P. Pesotsky , a lithograph was made from the portrait drawing, published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [5] .
