The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Moisey Ivanovich Karpenko from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Karpenko was the chief of the 1st Jaeger regiment , distinguished himself in the defense of Smolensk , where he was wounded, for the difference in the Borodino battle , where he was again wounded, received the rank of major general . During the foreign campaigns of 1813 and 1814 he fought against the French in Prussia , Saxony , in the battle of Bauzen he was again wounded and left the army until the end of 1813. Upon returning to duty, he first crossed the Rhine and then fought in France [2] .
Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817. On the left, a Star of the Order of St. Anne , 1st Class; on the neck there are crosses of the orders of St. George of the 3rd class and the order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; on board the uniform a cross of the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and a bronze noble medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the Vladimir ribbon on the chest right. On the back of the picture there is an inscription: Karpenko [3] . Signature on a frame with an error in a surname: M.I. Karpenkov, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Karpenko General Staff Attestation Committee was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery,” and on October 17, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on March 24, 1825 and June 21, 1827. The finished portrait arrived at the Hermitage on July 8, 1827. The previous delivery of the finished portraits was October 18, 1826, respectively, the picture dates from between these numbers [4] .
