History

On April 24, 1950, Jordan annexed the West Bank after signing the Rhodes Accords . In 1951, Jordan's King Abdullah Ibn Hussein was killed by a Palestinian from the Husseini clan. After joining Jordan, all Palestinians in the West Bank became citizens of this country [2] . The Jordanian National Assembly provided 30 seats for both natives of the West and natives of the East Bank of the Jordan River, which amounted to approximately the same population. Palestinians in the West Bank did not face discrimination and received the same rights as Jordanians in the eastern part of the country [3] .

In 1967, after the end of the Six Day War, Jordan, having been defeated by Israel , ceded control of the West Bank. However, Palestinians in the West Bank did not lose citizenship and seats in the Jordanian National Assembly. About 300,000 Palestinians fled to Jordan . In 1970, a conflict broke out between the armed forces of Jordan , led by King Hussein ibn Talal and the Palestine Liberation Organization, led by Yasser Arafat . This conflict gained fame as Black September in Jordan , after which Jordan knocked out PLO forces from its territory. Palestinians in the West Bank retained their Jordanian citizenship until Jordan renounced all claims to the West Bank on July 31, 1988. Jordan later recognized the PLO as the sole legal representative of the Palestinian people [4] .

In 2019, 2,242,579 refugees from Palestine lived in Jordan [1] .
