Story Description
The French nuclear attacking submarine "Titan" under the command of Captain Gronsham and the senior officer d'Orsy performs a combat mission to evacuate the special forces from the coast of Syria. The enemy notices traces of special forces, but they manage to sail into the sea on underwater tugs. Gifted young acoustics Chanterod first notices the appeared Iranian frigate, and then some strange noise, similar to the noise of a submarine, of unusual design. The submarine notices the French and sends the data to the frigate crew, the Iranians are raising an anti-submarine helicopter. Submariners can not leave, waiting for their commandos. Gronsham is given an ascent order, goes outside and knocks down a helicopter from MANPADS.
Upon his return to Brest, the command appoints Gronsham as captain to the newest rocket submarine Thunderstorm, d'Orsy becomes the captain of the Titan. Chanterod is trying to find the truth, but he encounters opposition from the commander, who is convinced that the submariners were dealing with an enemy drone. Having overheard and recalled the sounds of the keyboard keys of the commander, Shantherod unravels the secret database code, but does not find the data for the mysterious submarine. Trying to clarify the spectra of signals, he meets with a member of the library Diana, young people become lovers. Chanterod suddenly realizes that he has dealt with a decommissioned submarine, the data about which are being erased from the base. He secretly sneaks into the archive and finds information about the Soviet missile submarine "Timur-3". The arriving commander arrests Shantherod, but not for long - intelligence confirms Shanturod’s findings, except that Gronsham vouched for the acoustics, wanting to see him in his team. In connection with the growing aggression of Russia, and its invasion of Finland, the president sends troops there. The “Thunderstorm” under the escort of the “Titan” is sent to the Finnish shores, however Gronsham removes Chanterod, traces of marijuana are found in his urine (possibly from a cigarette that Diana smoked).
An alarm arises at the base, and Shantherd slips into the command center, being the only acoustics there. Timur-3 from the Bering Sea launched a rocket around France. The president orders Thunder to strike retaliation in Russia. The interceptor missile passes the target. Shankterod guesses that the rocket is launched without a warhead. Information comes from the United States that one of the Russian admirals received a large bribe. The sailors understand with horror that Islamic jihadists secretly acquired decommissioned “Timur”, paying the Russian renegade, appeared to the French off the coast of Syria and then staged a provocation, hoping to cause a nuclear war. The headquarters orders to disrupt the launch of "Thunderstorms."
The “Thunderstorm” lurks and goes into full radio silence, preparing for the strike. Admiral and Chanterod board the Titan. The admiral sends the Titan to one of two secret points for launch, and to the other sends anti-submarine aircraft. His calculation is justified, but Gronsham under the pressure of the senior officer refuses to talk to the "Titan", considering them according to the instructions of a possible adversary. Submarines exchange torpedo salvoes. D'Orsy, who went scuba diving to the “Thunderstorm”, disappears into the depths of the sea. The Thunderstorm torpedo smashes the Titan's bridge, Gronsham throws ballast, directing the enemy torpedo there, but the submarine also gets damaged. Shankterod succeeds in contacting Gronsham, who, sacrificing himself, remained in the gas-filled compartment and convince him to cancel the launch. The admiral, refusing a chance to escape, throws Chanterod from a sinking submarine to the surface. The stunned Chanterod, having honored the dead sailors, returns to Diana.
