Educated as a violinist. In 1930 he entered the BBC Symphony Orchestra at its foundation and worked there for eight years, after which he decided to pursue a career as a conductor. In 1941, he founded the New London Orchestra ( Eng. New London Orchestra ), at the head of which, among other things, he accompanied Mayra Hess at the performance of all Mozart’s piano concerts in a series of famous military concerts at the National Gallery (1943-1945) [2] , accompanied by Ernst von Donagny during his British tour (1947) [3] and Andres Segovia during the recording of the First Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1949) [4] .
In 1951, he married pianist Gina Bachauer and, to a large extent, sacrificed his further career for the sake of his wife’s career [5] . He accompanied the performances and recordings of Bachauer with various orchestras, accompanied her on tour trips. Thanks to this marriage, Sherman also joined the musical life of Greece and, in particular, conducted the premieres of two works by Manolis Kalomiris at the National Opera of Greece - the opera Misty Waters (1951) and the ballet Death Brave (1951) [6] . In 1978, after the death of his wife, he initiated the assignment of her name to the international piano competition in the United States.
